The Wagon Life for Me

Last weekend we wanted to run up to Lyon's Ferry to try to paddle board up the Palouse River toward the falls. It was supposed to be a gorgeous weekend so I thought why not camp? Unfortunately Lyon's Ferry is day use only, but there is a KOA just across the river. Usually we are not into camping unless it is really natural - like in the woods - but what we found on the Lyon's Ferry KOA website shook us to our very core. You can sleep in a Conestoga Wagon. A freaking Conestoga Wagon. WHAT?! You know we immediately hit "Reserve" on that.
Lyon's Ferry is about 90 minutes away from the Tri-Cities, and I find the drive beautiful. It twists through yellow fields and red basalt formations, spiked with green bushes against a blue sky. The colors are mesmerizing - well worth the drive just for a day even.
When we arrived at the wagon, it was better than we could have imagined. The wagon sleeps four people, has linens, a/c, electrical outlets and the coolest vibe ever. We paddle boarded the afternoon away, quick changed at the wagon, and ran to Walla Walla for dinner before returning to retire in the wagon. Sleeping was good - the wind made a lovely rustling sound against the canvas wagon cover and the stars were a sea above, if you wanted to take a refreshing jaunt outside the wagon.
In the morning, we made coffee, took a lot of silly pics of us acting our pioneer life, then headed home, winding through Dayton and skirting the Palouse on the way home. Basalt and fields a plenty. The wagon was economical (around $100) and SO FUN. I am seriously considering selling my house and living in a wagon. Mine would need a bathroom, though - the KOA wagon forced you to use the shared campground bathroom, which, if you have certain sensory sensitivities like me, can be a major challenge. It was worth it though, and I would highly recommend this fun excursion to anyone looking for a unique experience in the quiet and isolation of south central Washington's basalt country.
If you want help planning an excursion like this, I am your girl. My exact itinerary will be up for sale soon - would also be thrilled and honored to help you maximize your time focused on activities you love on your budget. Just book a consultation or email me at worldbyautumn@gmail.com!
